Flywheel and ring gear

Just had to replace my flywheel since my ring gear was chewed up by starter. Was on a B/S model 441777 typeC726-e1. Flywheel was 214618. Once I replaced the flywheel and tried starting, it looked like starter was doing the same thing. The starter has a metal ring gear. Any suggestions or is this normal?

So the starter was trying to already mess up the new flywheel gear, correct?

Yes, but the starter was checked out at a small engine shop and it was good.

Engine was trying to turn over but would “catch” the ring gear and I could see some of the material coming off so I stopped.

The problem may be the metal gear on the starter is not compatible with the plastic flywheel ring gear. Should be using the nylon/plastic starter gear.

That engine uses Briggs & Stratton 695708 which appears to be plastic.

Thanks. I’ll work to put back on the correct part back on the starter. Any tips on that process?

I replaces the metal gear with the correct one. The video helped a lot. Thanks for all you help. Got to mow some last evening.
