Flooding and spitting fuel out of carb 26hp Kohler Craftsman

Recently I would be about 30 mins into a job and the mower would start to rev up and then down and then blow black smoke and it would do it every 2 or 3 seconds. I shut it off and now it floods the carb every time I start it. I took off the filter and the plate on the carb and I got it running but the fuel it didn't need would drain and spit out the front. Is my float stuck open? I am assuming my solenoid to the carb is working otherwise it would not get fuel at all. Any help would be much appreciated and if possible point me in the direction to instructions to repair this issue I am no mechanic. I do have a bad fuel cap but that's beside the point of the flooding. When I got it running by taking the plate off the carb that holds the breather hose it would allow the fuel to drain out instead of back into the carb and it would run fine but its not with all the fuel pouring out.
