ferris 500???

is 4k a good deal on a 2013 ferris 500 52 inch deck with 30 hours on it? Or should I just look at something new in that range? Like a gravely, scag, toro, snapper, hustler, or a husky. I only mow a little over 2 acres, but I want the best bang for my buck.

Unless you are willing to spend more than $4k you won't get anything near the quality of the is500. What is your budget?

You might want to calculate the worth of warranty in the numbers.

my budget is 4-5,000. What does a ferris is500 go for new? I am a little worried about no warranty as well.

The is500 isn't made anymore (the new version is the is600), but one new would cost around $5800. 30 hours is nothing on a machine like that one. You are only mowing 2 acres and that mower can get it done in an hour or so, so you won't put many hours a season on it. I wouldn't worry too much about not having a warranty. I have a 2012 snapper pro s150xt, which is the same as a ferris without the suspension (both companies owned by briggs & Stratton). I mow a little over 4 acres and never used my warranty. Commercial mowers like these are built very heavy. As long as they aren't abused they will last 20 years or more. Any mower you look at new with the drive train and heavy duty components that mower has will cost you $6k and up.

Anyone know the difference between the 500 and the 600 ferris? Would it be worth the extra money?

The main difference is engine options. The 52" is500 offers the 27 hp professional series B&S engine. The is600 offers the 25 hp b&s commercial turf, or the 18.5 hp fs series Kawi engine. The other main difference is the is500 has zt2800 hydros and the is600 has zt3400 hydros. If you were mowing commercialy I would say it would be worth the extra money, but you are only mowing a couple of acres. You won't put many hours a season on that mower. I would suggest offering $3500 for the is500 and see if the dealer will come down a little more. He may not come that low, but you may get it for $3800.

The older is 500 mowers had separate pumps and wheel motors, but they were rated at the same speed as the newer ones with zt2800 hydros. Are you sure it's a 2013 model. I thought 2012 was the last year they were made. One way to tell is by the floor plate where your feet rest. If there is a knob at the top that can be unscrewed to remove the plate easily then it's a 2013. If there are bolts on each side that has to be removed before the plate will come off then it's a 2012 or older. Not that it matters much. That is a fair price for a mower of that quality with only 30 hours on it.

I will have to look into that. It looks like its in really good shape. How is the 27 briggs motor? I really wanted a Kawasaki motor.

I am not really a fan of any briggs engine other than the vanguard, but I have read good reviews on the commercial turf. However, my best friend just purchased a 48" snapper pro s50x with the 27 hp briggss els and that mower has plenty of power. His had 87 hours on it when he purchased it. He mows his 1.5 acres in about 45 minutes. If you are looking at buying a ferris with a Kawi engine you are going to spend over $6k. If the mower you are looking at is in good shape it's worth what they are asking. Like I said, if I were in your shoes I would make an offer to see if I could get them to come down a little more. I mow 4.2 acres with a 48" snapper pro s150xt and it takes me about 2 hour and 15 minutes. You won't be putting a lot of hard hours on that mower, so I wouldn't be as concerned with the engine as I would if I were planning to use it commercially. If you put 2 hours a week on it for 5 months that's only 40 hours a year. Some landscapers put that many hours on a mower in a week. You won't get a new mower anywhere near that quality for that price.

Is the B&S "Professional Series" the same thing as the Commercial? I had the 27hp Pro Series on my now departed Simplicity Prestige, What Chinese made, oil burning POS it was. 30 hours and it burned a quart of oil. Local dealer has had many problems with it.

I'm having a hard time even wanting a Vanguard on my next ZTR even though the dealers who I have talked to are all very happy with them (of course they are!). My gut says stay with the tried and true Kawi FX.

EDIT - local dealer is selling a new IS600Z with a Kawi FS for $4999. If $5K was my budget and Ferris was my choice, this is the ZTR I'd get!

The vanguard is made by daihatsu, which is owned by Toyota. Briggs partnered with them to make the engine. My father has a vanguard on his mower. Great engine. Any engine can malfunction. Mad Mackie is someone who has used the commercial turf engine on his mower and he seems to think its a good engine. I have read enough of his posts to believe he has a very good working knowledge of engines. As I said, I have no personal experience with the commercial turf engine, but I haven't read many bad reviews of them. I do have some experience with the els series. The ones with the flat air filters like on a car were not well designed and dirty air would by pass the filter when the plastic cover got hot and warped. B&s went back to the canister air filter with the last of the els engines, and it solved the problem. That's the engine on my friend's mower and it runs great. Doesn't use oil either. I am also a big fan of the kawasaki engine. I went with the fx series on my mower. However, the ones who have engine trouble on here usually use their mower more than a couple of hours a week. Residential owners usually don't stress a commercial mower enough to have too many problems. That is a great price for an is600 though. It would be worth looking at if the op can get one for that price. I have not found one in my area for under $6k.

I have a "good" Vanguard in my Simplicity. Being that I'm originally from Milwaukee I wish B&S was still the B&S of old....but alas it's not. It's a global company now.

Here's the link to that IS600. I got the feeling that it's not a "special" price...but maybe it is?

That's a great price for an is600v! I wonder though if that's not the 44" model price. I was pricing the 48" and 52" models. I also wonder if that is with the kawasaki engine. They usually cost five to six hundred more. Dealers usually show the price of their smallest models with the least features to bring customers in.

I looked at the add a little closer. It's a bit misleading. It says prices start at $4999.00. It isn't advertising an is600v with a Kawi engine for that price. That price is going to be for a 44" model with the commercial turf engine. A 48" or a 52" with the Kawi is going to run around the price I mentioned (in the $6k range).

yup that is what I just found out today. I asked my local ferris dealer about the 500. He said that the 500 is really the new 700 not the 600. Any comments on that?

The main difference with the is600 and is700 is engine hp and mower width. The is600 comes with either a 25hp commercial turf, or a 18.5 hp fs series Kawi. It is also comes with either a 44" or a 48" deck. The is700 comes with a 27 hp commercial turf, a 26 hp vanguard, a 23 or 24 hp fs series Kawi. It also comes with a 52" or 61" deck. What your dealer is saying is that since the is500 he is selling is a 52" with a 27 hp briggs engine it is more comparable to the is700. The is500 was offered in a 44",48",61" when it was in production as well, so it actually is comparable to either. The is600 and the is700 both offer the same zt3400 hydros, where as the is500 has smaller slower hydros. They all have the icd deck, which is a very good commercial mowing deck.

I have not checked yet. I asked the guy again and he stills says its a 13 model. I got him down to 3900 for it, but he won't budge any more. Would that be a good deal. The thing looks brand new in the pictures.

$4k was a fair price to me. Any price you get under that is gravy. It's worth what you think it's worth. As I said before, you won't find a new mower of that quality for anywhere near that price. Take a close look at everything before you buy. You will be able to tell for yourself if it's a 2012 or a 2013. It doesn't really matter anyway. I was just curious to know if ferris did make a 2013 is500.
