Eratic RPM

Engine on aAgri-Fab tow mower (finish bushhog). Engine has new carb., fuel lines, filter, and fuel shut off. With throttle plate in open position RPM is about 800-1000RPM and when it feels like it the RPM,s will rise to 2000-2500 RPM and mower works great for a few minutes then the cycle repeats again. Thought about valve adj. but engine starts excellant.

[ILENGINE]

Remove the valve cover and the spark plug, and turn the engine over by hand while watching the valves open and close. make sure both valves are opening the same distance. I have seen the intake lobe of the cam wear down to almost round and the engine would only run about half throttle.

adjust the valves first, but as said before look at the top end while rotating the engine.
