Is it possible to swap out a bad engine in a Craftsman Model #917-272-680.With an engine from a Craftsman Model #917-270-670. They are both B&S engines?
Well the first engine has a tapered shaft 7/16-20, 1" and length of 3 5/32", this all has to match on the new engine as well as having the mounting holes line up and room for it to fit. Unless the other engine pulleys will work as well.

I swap different motors on tractors all the time- flathead motors tend to run similar bolt patterns- while OHV motors run different patterns - i was going to put a 14.5HP OHV motor on my 80's agway- i had to drill a few new holes for it to bolt to the chassis- sometimes a lil modding may need to be done- id suggest using the same pulley off the old motor, so it doesnt affect the mower deck/drive setup with a different ratio- IF it fits the new motor crank end.
Only thing you also might run into is wiring- depends how the old motor is wired on how youll have to wire up the new motor.
Id mesure the motor and mesure the hood to see if itll will fit under there- unless its a big opposed twin or vtwin- you shouldnt have any issues, depending on how the hood is configured, you might need to mod the exhaust as well.
