Engine Running Fast

New to site but need your help.

I have a JD LX277 lawn tractor. When getting it ready for mowing after along winter, I did all that I usually do: fresh gas, check/replace oil/ clean deck/etc.....

When I fired it up for the first time (and subsequent), I pushed the choke up to start and once started, let it spring back to original position. The engine continued to run fast and then even faster. Throttle was kept on low as when started. The only way I could slow it down was to push choke to up position again and hold it there. Throttle doesn't seem to do much since it was already running fast.

I removed engine cover to check movement of things and all seems normal.

Any suggestions besides a repairman?

Make sure the throttle shaft in the carb is moving freely. They have a tendency to get sticky from fuel when setting. And because the governor spring will move the throttle plate to high speed when not running, it will stick in that position.

OK, I checked out the carburator and due to my ignorance on the subject, how do I get it open to check this out?

Depending on the engine is may be easier to get a hold of the governor arm and move it back and forth to make sure the throttle in the carb moves.

The arms move freely and without sticking

If the throttle moves freely then we are down to three possible issues. there is an air leak between the carb and the cylinder. the throttle butterfly has come loose and cannot control the throttle. The governor gear has broken.

Once the weather warms up I will check this out. We're getting about 25 - 35 degree weather with freeze warning the next couple of days and snow flurries for the next several days not to mention the rain. I thought winter was over!

Grass is getting longer though so I have to get this done once it warms up.

Great news for me! I fixed it!! Halleluia........ Once I looked closer and took the hood off, I realized I could access carburator through the air filter. Once I got the filter and housing off, I cleaned everything and put back together. I fired the mower up and it works perfectly.
