I have an old (20 years) pressure washer that has a 5HP Briggs/Stratton with horizontal shaft. A few weeks ago the connecting rod broke. I replaced the connecting rod and piston (with new rings). The bore was smooth and clean. I removed the cylinder head and cleaned valves etc. as best I could. It all looked good to me. Put it back together and set the valve/rocker arm clearances as per specs with piston a little past top dead center (at the start of the power stroke). I cannot get it to crank. It spits, pops a little, backfires a little or just does nothing (except spin when I pull the rope), but never really tries to crank real good. The muffler does heat up some so I know there is some amount of combustion at some point. The timing marks are all lined up, the camshaft lobes look ok to me. The camshaft is the only big piece left to replace. It is one of those with the plastic lobes/plastic timing gear, but with steel shaft. Maybe the big gear on the end of camshaft somehow rotated when the connecting rod broke, don't know. I've twisted it with my hands it feels solid. Maybe lobe tolerances/dimensions are more touchy than I realize. Don't know, never been down this road before. Heeeelp.

post model xxxxxx, type xxxx, trim xx & code numbers from B&S engine, possibilities: flywheel key broken, adjusted valves on wrong stroke, both valves should be closed & loose if on correct stroke & 1/4" past TDC, air filter inspected for replacement, oil level correct on dipstick, lastly carburetor problem.

purchase this kit for your carburetor, remove carb. & clean thoroughly with carb. cleaner, all passages super clean, install kit, reinstall & give her a go. fresh gas with a quality brand fuel stabilizer per instructions on bottle. the description you gave of engine spitting, popping, etc. are signs of a starving carburetor in need of repair.

Briggs Stratton IntekPro OHV 110432-0036-E2 5-HP. Flywheel key is solid (just checked again). Adjusting valves with piston at 1/4" past TDC on its compression stroke. Ran great prior to connecting rod breaking so I'm saying that carb is probably ok. BTW my name is also Mark ;).
