Engine "hammering" noise

Hi! I have a Cub Cadet LT 1045, 46" deck, Kohler Courage SV470-61 engine. Today when I started mowing, the machine seems louder and seems to have a "hammering" sound coming from the engine. It back fired at least 4 times in about 30 minutes, and when I shut it down, it again seemed to "hammer" and stopped pretty quickly. Plenty of oil; I checked before starting. Any ideas?

Problem is solved.

I have never had this happen before, but both screws holding on the muffler had worked their way out and were lost. The muffler was hanging and this was causing the "Hammering" sound and misfiring. I replaced the bolts (5/16 x 18 x 3/4), and added some locktite for good measure. The machine started right up and ran smoothly, and much quieter. I was fearing the worst, but the problem was minor, and the new bolts cost $1.34 at Home Despot.

Thanks!
