Engine cranks hard

I have a Cub Cadet, push mower, model 11A-18MCO56, with a 1P70MO engine that pull starts, extremely hard. It will pull the recoil starter cord right out of my hand. It has finally broken the plastic starter parts on top of the engine. Before this happened, I checked the valve adjustments. They appeared to be ok. I have not removed the spark plug & cranked the engine. I will do that today. Has any one had a similar problem ?

It maybe out of time. The key for the flywheel can sheer, and then hard to start or something it will pull the rope right out of your hand.

To check, take the spark plug out and pull the starter rope. Still hard to pull?

If it pull hard it could be flywheel brake, internal engine stuff or a jam under mower.

If pull easy, maybe the key.

If you are not ABLE to do the next step, TAKE IT TO THE SHOP! You could damage your engine!

Remove spark plug from engine. Remove top of engine to the flywheel. Remove flywheel nut to the top of the crank shaft. Tape the bale on the handle bar as you are mowing. With a small pry bar lift the flywheel and a little tap with a hammer on the crank nut, the flywheel should pop off. Check key is in time.

Before you go pulling the engine apart, I would do as Deerlane suggested and check to make sure the blade is not bound up in some way.
Very easy to get wire,rope, or even some tough vines wound around the blade/spindle.

Nothing binding the blade. I had just changed it before the recoil starter came apart. It's always been hard to start, meaning it would pull the start cord from my hand, every time; that's what happened the last time, & the recoil start came apart. It's my on fault, I never took it back to Home Depot, No excuses, I scr--ed up. Thanks for the suggestion, Sid.

I want to change one thing I said. Remove the crank nut is wrong, loosen crank flywheel nut to the top of threads. This is to prevent damage to crank shaft threads.
