We have a 2004 60" exmark zt that has a blown engine. Want to put on a Briggs cause they are way cheaper than a Kohler Or kawi.
Engine on there now is/was a 25 hp kohler horizontal shaft. want to put on similar hp.
The concern we have is mounting a shaft to the front of the engine to run the hydros. Back shaft is fine for the clutch but we are concerned that the bolt pattern on the front is different.
Anyone done this?
What problems may we have
I have done this many years ago, but can't tell you what engine I did it with. Briggs had an adapter which bolted on the flywheel, for a front end take-off. I'm not in the shop until next Tuesday to see if I can find out if the adapter is still avaiable. You might to check with you dealer and his B&S rep. I'll watch the post to see if you have any luck.
Thanks for the reply
I have the adapter we took off the kohler engine. I'm not sure if the bolt patterns are the same --
I don't want to buy the engine and then find out the bolt patterns are different
Can you give us the model and spec numbers of you Kohler engine and a picture of the front PTO setup. I contacted my B&S rep this morning. Would a 23hp work for you?
Looking at old manuals and i found the spec and model #
Here it is:
Model: CH740S
Spec; CH 740-0075
serial # 3616406761
Sorry took so long---busy
I am attaching pictures to help identify issues concerning front pto.
A 23hp MIGHT work. here is a 25 hp kohler command pro on there now
Best I can measure the mounting holes are 3 3/8 in front to back
and 7 1/4 in side to side.
Sorry but I can't find a substitute engine for you project. Front takeoff is where I run into problems. Couple of things I did find out. First your engine with that model number is a 27hp, not 25hp. Second it has been superceded to model number
CH740-3117. I have list a couple of sites that sell that engine. Prices range from $1600-$2700 so if you go shopping reaping do your homework. There are a lot more sites out there selling engine so you might find it even cheaper. Hope this helps.
