engine bogging down

I have a john deere L120 with a 48" deck with a 20hp Briggs and when I engage deck or just drive up a incline it bogs down the motor. We have checked the spark,the linkage on the governor and the compression is 90+ on one cylinder and 120 on the other can any give any help on getting it to run correct

it could be a carb issue or there could be some sort of ground on the kill wire that when you go up a hill or turn the deck on then the kill wire grounds itself out on like the frame or some piece of metal. there should be a connector in the kill wire, just unplug that and try it out and see if it still acts the same. you just have to turn the motor off by connecting those 2 wires back together. cant hurt to try you know?

Thanks for the info we put another carb on it from another mower that ran good and the same issue

Take off the valve covers an check to see if the exhaust rocker arms are loose. I have seen the exhaust lobe on the cam shaft to be worn off because of a hard lifter

An engine will run fairly well on one cylinder, until you put any real load on it like go up an incline or engage the deck.


Just to see if it is the case, unplug the plug wire on one side. See if it will start and run. Then shut it off, and try it the other way around, that will let you know which side to focus on.

I forgot to post was when I engage it will bog down but it recovers after a little until I hit some taller grass or grass period and it bogs down I can stop it and let it sit for a second with blades running it will recover

Yeah. I still suggest the same simple, cheap, free, easy test.....

It is easy to do.
