Engin turns over but not getting fuel. If I prime the carburetor the engine will run until the prime runs out. There is cylindrical object on the bottom of the carburetor whose function I don't know. Would this have something to do with the fuel flow or should I glean the carburetor?

welocome!! I am gonna take a guess that cylindrical object is an anti afterfire solenoid. there should be an electrical plug on it if it is. its function is to stop the flow of fuel into the combustion chanber after the engine is shut off, which fuel then goes intot he exhaust hitting the hot surface of the exhust and causing a "pop" afterfire( not backfire).
its a simple thing to test to find out if that's the problem, which it reads like. heres a write up from briggs and Stratton on testing it:
Inspecting The Anti-After Fire Solenoid | Mower & Small Engine Repair | Briggs & Stratton FAQ
sometimes they get gummed up and just need to be cleaned.
if that is the problem, a cheap fix is to remove or snip off the pintle on the solenoid then reinstall on the carb.

Like tomsteve stated I would check that out. If the same problem exist then it's cleaning carb time.
