Electric PTO? Blades stopped.

I have a Scag SMWC-61A with a Kohler CV740s Command Pro 27 engine. While mowing today, I kept smelling either what I thought was oil or rubber. I thought maybe a belt was going bad. I kept using until something happened. It did. Blades dis-engaged and will not re-engage. I just replaced the PTO switch a year or so ago. No fuse was blown. i have replaced a ton of other electrical parts on this in the past couple years. BUT, I think this is the original PTO clutch. Is this my culprit? Is there a way to test?
Thanks in advance. You all have been an immense amount of help to me over the years.

The simple way to test is by using a 12V "test lamp". Unplug the 2 leads from the clutch and connect the test lamp to the same wires. If the safety requirements are met (fat guy in the seat, etc), then the light will illuminate when the PTO switch is engaged.
