Eco-Friendly Ice Melt?

I've been really been making an effort to "go Green" the last year. Is there a eco-friendly version of ice melt?? The road to my place is pretty steep, and I have to make sure it stays ice free.

I use a lot of wood ash from my shop stove on my south facing drive. The wetter it gets, the darker it gets, the darker it gets, the more sun it soaks up! ~~ grnspot110

I use a nitrogen-based fertilizer. (An excavator who builds roads told me about this.) I melts things down and then when the wet slop runs off, there is fertilizer going into the ground where I would be putting it anyhow.

We use ashes here too, it is easier than not with the wood stove, it makes use of the ashes, I just put them in a big metal can and use them as I need them.

We buy bagged building sand from our lumber yard. We place the sand mixed with our left over fertilizer in plastic bins strategically located along our private roadway. The fertilizer melts things, and the sand grit adds some traction.
