Echo SRM 230 Questions

I lost compression on my 230. I pulled cylinder apart and noticed two rings on the piston. I also found a video tutorial on a SRM 225 (not 230) that shows ONE ring. Mine has two! Two vendor online parts stores only list one ring part number. Yet, their schematic shows two rings. Does my SRM 230 require 2 rings of the same part number? Or, are they unique? I am used to rebuilding four cycle motors that have specific and unique rings on each piston. Also, does the cylinder wall require honing before reassembling?????

Don't really need honing as these are plated and honing wear away the plating.

Second need the unit serial number for parts look up but all the SRM-230 IPLs on Echo site does have two rings. It appears all serial breaks uses the same 2 ea A101000000 rings.

I am confused! I have rebuilt dozens of 4 cycle motors over my lifetime. When replacing rings, we honed the cylinder walls. The SRM 230 is the first 2 cycle motor that will have to rebuild. I have read and viewed other videos showing how to hone 2 cycle cylinders, but they were not specific to the brand of motors or their size. You mentioned that the cylinder is plated, and honing will wear too much away from cylinder wall. Is this plating specific to the 230, ECHO, or all 2 cycle motors.

Most Echo and Stihl 2 cycle cylinders are plated. Some Husqvarna and Poulan are plated/coated. I actually got a Poulan chainsaw here that has a Nickel Ceramic coated cylinder. I know for sure as I installed it as an upgrade of the chainsaw. Some 2 cycle uses a plated/coated piston instead a plated/coated cylinder. Others don't have anything. It just depends on the specs and the manufacture.

Also 2 cycles have ports in the cylinder that regular hones can hang on and damage.

THX!!! I thought about at least using emery cloth to scuff up cylinder walls. I was taught that the honing on 4 cycle motors was needed for the rings to seat properly. I am dumb concerning 2 cycle motors. Hum...Ironically, I can still see honing or scuffing marks inside on the ECHO cylinder walls. I assume from factory. Somehow, I assume there was not enough oil in my gas mixture that caused rings to collapse (heat) prematurely. Now, I use Echo red 2 cycle oil. It cost a bit more $$$, but I don't want this crap to happen again.

What is the condition of the piston, rings, and cylinder? Is there scoring? How much? If there is significant scoring, then new piston, rings, and cylinder will be needed. OEM Echo parts will be expensive. This is why it is rare to rebuild a $300 (new) trimmer.

Just know if you replace rings only, and piston and cylinder are scored enough, it will do no good. Not sufficient compression to start and run engine with power.
