DYT4000 transmission (?) problem

My DYT 4000 developed a problem at the end of the season. I first noticed this towards the end of a lawn cutting.

The tractor will start to "Buck" or lurch. I also started to notice that at time, particularly in a turn, it would make a horrible noise that sounded like a high pitched grinding from the rear.

I purged the transmission a few times per the owners' manual, and I put on a new belt, but neither made an difference at all.

Other than this problem, the unit is in great shape, and I'd hate to replace it if the problem was not major.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Fornaog, I looked at the diy site which is dated 2008 . Seems like I saw somewhere that later dyt 4000 did change to a different transmission. I have a 2004 and only the engine has been trouble, about 600-700 hours.
