DR Mower drive box

I recently purchased a used circa 1995 DR mower. There is a oil fill port on top of the drive box. I found a manual online, but there is no mention of lubrication required for the drive box. The previous owner wasn't sure if it actually needed lubrication. We both wonder if the oil port was added by another previous owner.
