Good evening. I have a concern about my lawn tractor being able to pull a lawn dethatcher without trashing the trans. I have a 2012 LTX1046 Hydrostatic with a Kohler Courage 22HP engine which I bought used in 2018. It's a great machine for mowing; however, I have never pulled anything with it. My lawn is a mix of barely any thatch to heavy thick thatch which I'm pretty sure has never been dethatched. I rent the property which the home was built in 1953, and the lawn is just as old without any pro maintenance. I purchased a Brinly 40" Dethatcher Model DT2-40BH-G with the intention of attempting to dethatch myself. I am confident that the engine will perform fine, but not sure about the Hydrostatic Transmission. Any thoughts, comments, advice, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If y'all don't think I should pull this thing, I shall return it. Thanks too much. Merci' Beaucoup. Vendredi enfin (Friday at Last).

With the age of the machine, I do not advise pulling much of anything with it. This unit has a sealed hydrostatic transmission that has never had the oil changed in it.

Thank you very much for your response Auto Doc. That is exactly what I was concerned about.

These hydrostatic transmissions are great units, but they do wear with age and use. The internal brass swash plates gradually wear, and the hydraulic plunger piston springs get tired. Along with that the oil get tired and dirty from repeated heat cycles and fine metal sediment that naturally collect over time and hours of use.
