Blades Do Universal Blades Work on Toro SR?

Hi All,

I have a 2002 21" Toro Super Recycler that I wanted to replace the blade on. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the OEM blade in stock nearby, so I picked up a universal 21" blade that listed Toro under the brands it was compatible with.

I noticed that the universal blade is flat unlike the original which is concave. The universal blade seemed to mate fairly well with the retainer blade but obviously not perfectly as the retainer is convex to match the concavity of the blade. I attempted to run the mower with the universal, but since it wasn't quite locked in, I got a lot of loud rattling and can see where the blade is hitting the accelerator, so this doesn't appear to be a safe setup.

After an hour of googling I couldn't find a definitive answer on this topic. There appear to be lots of Toros that use the concave blade setup and lots of universal blades that say they work on Toros, so I expected to find more mention of flat universals not working on the concave Toros if that were the case.

Does anyone know?

No, you are trying to mate a flat blade to a convex blade adapter. You will not be able to tighten it properly and will have a very, very dangerous situation if you try to use it. You are turning that blade at 3000 RPM's, with a blade tip speed of close to 17,000 feet per minute. If some thing comes loose, can you see the potential safety hazard by trying this.

I agree I bought a replacement blade online all in all 20 with shipping 5 days to my door.

Thanks for the replies, guys. It seemed pretty obvious to me that this setup wasn't quite right and the rattling I heard in the few seconds I ran the engine confirmed that. I'm still just surprised that I couldn't find any other mention of it online. Is there something that this style of blade mounting is called other than convex?

I found a few brands like the Oregon Gator blades that make replacements specifically for this mower that should work in addition to the OEMs but I'm not sure I've ever seen a universal that was anything other than flat.

Thanks again.

I don't think they make them universal for top end brands honda has a dual blade set up and you cannot use universal with it
