Do not top off......

I was checking the hydro oil containers in my Gravely HD ZT 60 yesterday. One side was empty. According to the cap, it said something to the effect of "Don't top off." I looked over my shoulder, saw no-one, and quickly added a couple of ounces of 15W50. Is my mower soon to be headed to the junk pile? Why not add a couple of ounces when it's down just a little?

If one side is low check for leaks.

By the topping off it means don't fill to full mark when cold. Check when the hydros are hot as oil expands. By topping when cold the reserve tank can overflow.

I have seen tanks to barely have anything in them cold but be nearly at full mark when hot.

BTW need the actual model number as the ZT 60 I look up had only hydro tank serving both hydros.

OK, thanks. I just brought it up to the point it was covering the little hole feeding the gear box. HD ZT 60 991156
