have a model 138-633-019 agway made by mtd 1988 year with 38" deck.
this deck mtd #753-04376 uses a #754-0329 v belt (5/8 x 69), front stabilizer rods #711-0790
that fasten to the stabilizer shaft assy just behind the front axle.they are spring loaded
by a spring that hooks on a cross rod under the right front running board.
the belt is correct and the motor pulley is not rusted.
deck does not disengage when handle is pulled back to disengage position.
pulley brakes appear to be ok. deck does not appear to move forward when
handle is pulled back and three belt keepers are in correct postion on engine pulley.
hoping someone has had this same problem and was able to correct.
picture shows my deck.

There should be a rod that goes from just in front of the tranny that hooks to a pivots going to the rear of the deck. The front of that rod connects the deck height control and moves the deck forward when you disengage the deck. Check that rod. it also has threads on the end to adjust the disengagement position.

I believe that is a different deck. mine has no adjustable rod at the rear.

Maybe that's the problem?

It looks like then only thing that would move the deck forward on disengage would be the levers that connect toward the center of the deck from front to rear. Maybe something on the pivot bar with the height handle attached is suppose to push them forward.

as far as I can tell according to the parts list for pre mentioned model number
everything shown is present. belt seems Ok and is correct part number but
I am wondering if a new belt could possibly correct the problem.
thanks for all replies.

I see the bare deck pic. Does it not have a tensioner or is with the frame? If so, does it have a square hole which a ratchet fits into to relieve pto belt tension?

no tensioner or idler pulley.

Does it have the rod That ILengine speaks of? If not, how do you engage/disengage the blades? The handle you mention; where does it connect?

Perhaps it's this style?

it is not that style. my model number is 138-633-019.
I have the parts list for it and it does not have the setup you show.
do you know the model number of that setup. would like to send picture of
the parts list but so far am unable to do that.
thanks for your interest

It's a MTD Ranch King. Is the parts list you have online? Link?

Looking at a schematic using the model number you provided. Doesn't show anything regarding engagement. It does show a safety switch in proximity to the inside bottom of the deck handle. Does your schematic also show that?

EDIT: No reply needed.
