deck belts breaking

mtd yardmachine lawn tracter keeps breaking belts. any general ideas on why, other than correct belt size or put on correctly. replaced a couple of times successfully in the past but now they dont last more than a few minutes then the whole deck will begin to shake violently then belt burns up. pullys appear to be lined up fine, not a lot of obvious play in any of the pullys but one is definately scored. thanks

I would look a little deeper at that scored pulley and all the pulley and or any shaft bearings, it sounds
like a bearing getting ready to seize.

Also welcome to LMF......cubby

this isnt right at all......look at the belt guides when the deck is raised and lowered....make sure the belt is routed properly....if its flopping....its either a too long belt or a pulley is loose...get back after you take a look:thumbsup:..............go head and give us the model/serial numbers of the mower too:thumbsup:

its the belt that is called for , tight when engaged, no flop when moved through the diff heights, and pulleys have no play.mtd yardmachine 17 hp, 42" cut, model 13ak608g062.

Had a new Yard Machine in the shop a few years back that kept burning the deck drive belt. the problem was the paint on the pulley hadn't all com off and was create a rough spot when the deck wasn't engaged and would toast the belt in about 2 minutes so replace or smooth any rough pulleys because that could be the problem.

its all apart pulleys off bearings seem ok. question now did belt score the pully as it was shredding or did the rough pully tear up the belt. if the latter why is the pully damaged. gonna run the pully with high speed drill to see if bearings act up. picks on the way

that pulley is screwed!......get rid of it.....replace it!....looks like the idler?......number 28 on the parts diagram?

reddragon

reddragon

it looks like a rust thing....is it like that all the way around?

its plastic, and yes 28. so the question remains, did the belts tear up the pully on its way out X 3 or is the worn pully ruining the belts?either way i will replace the pully

i'd definitely blame the pulley....it should quiet it down as well......its interesting....mines the same thing....but they used a steel pulley....if they give you that option...take the steel one:thumbsup:

ok decided to sharpen blades. first one off . second one = broken spindle shaft, twisted right off( with some persuasion), so found one used for free, waaay too easy, get it home and the shaft is1/4 inch shorter than original. A new one is looking better and better!!!

that broken shaft could be to blame also....was the spindle loose?

bladerunner

no i broke it getting the nut off

back together cuts like new. now to address an old problem when blades not engaged it runs erratic, like the throttle is being pummped? has new plugs, new oil, new air filter.???

surging.....its the carb...but check spark at both ends first to get that out of the way......carb rebuild kits run about $23.....it pretty easy....i would recommend soaking the parts overnight....tell us how it goes:thumbsup:........also ...bad gas on these twins make them surge too

Be sure to inspect all the other pulleys on your mower as well. Any ones that are damaged will cause your whole mower deck to shake like a wet dog when the high or low spots (pinched or spread, respectively) come around.
