Deck assist question, please

#1

I just traded my Raptor SD for a new XDX. The deck is WAY harder to raise with the foot pedal on the XDX. I saw the factory Deck Lift Assist kit and wondered if there was a downside to installing it. Anyone here installed/ used it? If there is no downside to having it, I think my 73 year old, feeble right leg would thank me.
Any feedback appreciated.

Click on the first link below.

There is just one review about the item that you are inquiring about.

Just maybe it could help you out?

It appears though that Hustler Corp. no longer is selling it?

Sorry about the delay in thanking you. When I first posted that question I didn’t realize that my mower already has the brackets to accommodate this kit.
Should be a 10 minute addition, IF I can find the kit. I’m dead sure my leg will thank me.

Turns out, the deck lift assist kit is readily available, and while my dealer didn’t have it in stock, they ordered it for me and I should have it in a few days.
Notice: I’ll be glad when it’s installed!

Hi Skip
Was wondering if you installed the deck lift assist kit? Does it make a difference?

You’re not going to believe this, but it has been on backorder with my dealer all this time. I only saw your question tonight because I’m canceling my order tomorrow, and I was checking on line tonight and it seems to be readily available at several different places. I had paid my dealer in advance.
I used my mower for the first time this season this weekend, and I swear, that deck lift is BRUTAL! Hopefully I’ll post about success with it soon!

Hi Skip I just saw your reply.
You won’t believe that my dealer ordered one for me 4 weeks ago and it hasn’t shipped yet even though it shows to be in stock at Hustler.
The dealer said he is waiting on other parts too.
I’ll give it a little while and then look elsewhere.
Let me know if you find one online and if you do what you think of it.
Thanks for your reply

Wow...I have to hand it to both of you guys for your patience.

Though I can fully understand and comprehend on ordering direct from a authorized sales and service dealer, etc. because I would have done the same........ but even though they say that it shows in stock and it's been weeks (now going into months) on waiting on that part, since you placed an order......now your just waiting and wondering when if ever you'll get a call letting you know that it has finally arrived.....I think after two weeks of waiting I would have just cancelled my order and ordered the same kit from some other source (first calling and making sure that they actually have it in stock and for sure that they would have no problem receiving it of course).

But to each their own.

Hey, they don’t call me Job for nothing !
Ok, I canceled my order with my dealer, got my refund, and found the kit on line. Last summer, when I ordered, it didn’t seem to be available. I’ve now ordered and it’s showing shipped today. Found it at
hustlerlawnmowerparts.com
Next project will be a suspension system under my seat.
Good luck!

I’m going to wait a bit before I look online because my dealer said he was not going to charge me for it.
I really don’t have any problem raising the deck but my wife does and she will be using it some this summer when I’m busy with other projects.

😂.......well that's good to know.....even though I had originally posted two different online sites that had the kit available......last year (July 2022....see post #2 above).....and hustlerlawnmowerparts was one of them! 😂

Well I guess....better late than never.

My apologies Mr. Mower. I’m usually extremely good at taking advice. The best I recall, at that time last year my dealer told me told me that they’d have that kit in a couple of weeks. As I was wanting to start a relationship with my new dealer, I ordered it and paid them, over the phone. When I tried to cancel the order a few months later and get a refund, they said they couldn’t refund over the phone, and I’d need to come in (out of town), so that drug out the process. Having said all that, I like these guys very much.
AND, to JG870, my kit came today and I rushed home from work and installed it. 10 minutes max, and while admittedly subjective, I’m guessing the effort to depress the deck lift pedal has been reduced by at least 40%. I really like this mower, so this is great news for me. Order with confidence.

Thanks for the report Skip sounds like it’s a winner.
I’ll give my dealer a couple more weeks if it doesn’t come in I’ll order one online.

Skip, so you got your part from Hustlerlawnmowerparts.com?

I ordered from them a few days ago. A couple days later I got a text message from Pronto Mowers stating my order is delayed. After some tracking research, I figured out it was in regards to the order I placed from hustlerlawnmowerparts.com. I didn't have any notification from hustlerlawnmowerparts by email, but after clicking through my account, I finally found where it said it's 'on hold' and I needed to call them to resolve the issue. Hmm. Did some googling, and their phone number/address is associated with quite a number of different websites from mowers to paint sprayers to diesel parts. It all seems too suspicious, so I requested a refund from their chat bot and it did come through.

I'm getting ready to order from Foards now, hopefully they have it in stock! They look like a legit business and not some sort of broker. I have a bum knee and can't lift the deck at all with my right foot. If it helps 40% as you estimate, that'll be enough to work for me!

Yes jeepi, I ordered from hustler parts and the order was fulfilled by Pronto. You are completely justified in being suspicious of
EVERYTHING on line.
And BTW, you won’t believe what a difference that kit is going to make. Money WELL spent!
Only other thing is a suspension seat kit.
Coming soon!

Jeppi I also tried to order from hustlerlawnmowerparts.com and after charging my credit card they told me it was back ordered and would be 60 days before it was available.
I canceled my order and they refunded me.
I found one (the last one) on eBay and ordered it’s scheduled delivery is today. I’m hoping I have the same results as Skip. I’ll post and let you know hopefully tomorrow.

I suppose that may be why my order was 'on hold', but it seemed odd that I needed to call to "resolve the issue", rather than simply sending an email to say it's on backorder. Anyway, the order was successfully cancelled and I ordered it today from Foards. Fingers crossed they actually have it in stock! It doesn't actually say it's in stock, but I noticed another item marked sold out, so I have high hopes. I also ordered the flex forks this week and they're on the way. I'm told they smooth out the ride significantly.

Got the spring kit this afternoon and installed it in less than 10 minutes.
Yep Skip I got the same results you did. It takes way less effort to raise the deck, now my wife can easily raise and lower with no problem at all.
40% to 60% less pressure just guessing but in any case WAY less than before adding the spring.
Hustler should include this as standard equipment for the price you pay for the mower.

Glad to hear that. And you’re right, after actually using my mower for the first time after installing the kit, I knew my 40% figure had been conservative. And like you, if the XDX needed the deck assist so badly, and the mounting brackets are already on the mower, why in the dickens didn’t Hustler include it.
Oh well, it’s just nice these days to find something that works as advertised.

Yep glad I got it and my wife is really happy!
I would definitely recommend it for anyone who owns or uses a Hustler Raptor XDX.👍

Mine have shopped, anxiously awaiting their arrival!

Meanwhile, I got my flex forks and got them put on yesterday. They're a pricier upgrade, but I think they'll be well worth it. My yard isn't exactly smooth and I could hardly take advantage of the increased max speed on the XDX over my old mower. With the flex forks, I put the levers all the way front and while it didn't take away all the bumps, it no longer seems like it's unreasonably hard on me or my mower.

In my short test yesterday, it also seemed like the flex forks also really help with what I call high centering. The frame on this mower is so stiff, if I run over a tree root or small ridge just wrong with a front tire, it makes the rear tire on that side lose traction.

I think I'm going to be very glad I made this upgrade, recommend anyone to try them if you have a rougher yard!

Sounds like the flex forks are going to work nicely Jeppi, give us an update after you use them a few times! I had heard they do better after some breaking in.
