D100 Deere w/ B&S engine quit

I have a Deere D100 lawn tractor with about 88 hrs that has engine issues. While mowing it started running rough with no rpms then quit. It has spark and fuel as I replaced the fuel pump and checked it for flow. It will start but runs rough and backfires loudly with no rpm. I read somewhere that there is a decompression valve that can stick. Is that a possible issue, how does one fix it, and is there anything else that might cause the problem such as the ignition/timing?

Sheared flywheel key problems are rare on rider engines, so low chance of that. Without knowing what briggs engine you have it will be about impossibly to suggest possible problems. If you could post the model, type, and code off the engine it would narrow down the possibly issues.

Single cylinder OHV. I would start by removing the valve cover, and check the push rods. Maybe on is bent and came out. If you find a bend push rod, check inside the valve springs, and make sure the valve guide hasn't worked out and that is what caused the push rod to bend. the aluminum push rod on the intake valve may have worn it two where it goes through the push rod guide plate.

Normally the compression release problems prevents the engine from cranking over fully, If the engine is cranking normal, that about rules out the compression release.

If you don't find bent or dislodged pushrods, turn the engine over by hand, and watch the valves open and close. Make sure they open about the same amount. There has been a few cases where the camshaft lobe would wear round and not open the valves fully if at all.
