I Have a Kohler CV740 And it keeps shearing the flywheel key it will start and run fine for about 2- 3 uses after that it just turns but wont fire since the key has broken I have changed key with the correct size stated by kohler and even had machine shop make a "stronger key" Still broke... HELP! I am getting frustrated.

I am by far a small engine expert, but I have seen this before

Is the flywheel tight enough?

Is the taper worn on the shaft or the flywheel?

Is the flywheel hitting something?

Does it have any kind of a load attached to it? Like a belt accessory?

I assume you are using the Kohler part?

Pull start or electric? Is the flywheel hitting the starter or is the starter drive not completely disengaging?

Food for thought until someone better with these comes on.

You about covered the possibilities except I would also add make sure there is no grease or oil on the taper of the engine crankshaft or flywheel.
