Hello,I am currently planning and collecting parts to build a 4x4 toy for the kids to ride on when we have our weekend offroading trips.
I have an 18 hp craftsman 2cyl mower that was given to me. It has a 6sp trans/axle. It has 1,2 and 3. Gears for forward and reverse with high/low.and the lever to lock rear wheels...
Now my question is... can i use this as a tranfers case type setup?for my project? Im not asking if this will bolt up this way..it will not..i said custom.Im concerned about strength.it is belt driven but i will either shaft it with or without a centrifgul clutch.has the clutch/brake built in.
I am a jeep guy and have a 97 cherokee with all the. Factory suspension under it.plan is to use axles and springs and steering components.Speed is not a concern as it will be for the kids.can always govern the power output on engine.
Im thinkin the mower trans would be great with all the gearing selections.it will have 31 inch tires and jeep axles are 3:55 gears.
Any thoughts suggestions or opinions are gladly excepted..
If i dont do this,I will use the engine to build some other toy..this is a new idea and do not plan spending money on anything but steel for frame n cage.maybe a clutch.
Throw your thoughts out.id love to hear it.
To clarify... a drive shaft from engine to trans .trans turned 90° and rear mower axle pointed front and rear for shafts to jeep axles.like a transfercase

Love the idea but seems a bit much for a simple lawn mower transaxle to hold up to considering each side would only normally run one 18-20" tire and would have to run 2 31" tires, I've burnt out a few trannys with just 18's 2wd in the mud

All though I've seen it done on you tube so don't get discouraged but mixing lawn tractor and jeep parts your week link is on that axel get a few spares an giver hell

Also the brakes for the transaxle won't stop 31's there pretty shady stoping the stock mower
