Help! I have an old cub cadet mower that was given to me several years ago. It has done pretty well until recently. The person that gave it to me had to put an electric fuel pump on it several years back. I can't remember what he said was wrong with the original one. Anyway, It went out so we replaced it. The mower did fine for about 15 minutes then died. The fuel line had dry rotted from the tank and all the gas leaked (poured really) out. We replaced it and put on another fuel pump. Turned it on and it was flooding the carburetor. Replaced the carburetor. Same thing. Took the hose off the pump and when we started it to see how much gas was going through it was squirting out a LOT of gas like about 3 feet out. It sounds like the pump is putting out to much but this was not a problem till we replaced that fuel line. I am at a loss. I need that mower and can't get it to anyone. Any ideas what would cause this? I did talk to a repair shop and he said he had no idea.

First make sure you installed a low pressure pump. 2 psi - 4 psi max. Anything above 4 psi will not work. Also double check the carburetor as maybe some the old fuel line made its way to the carb and got into float valve and has jammed it open. And make sure you have at least a filter after the pump and you reuse a filter don't reinstall backwards.

Also those Chinese fuel pumps are hit and miss. A customer had me to install one and it only lasted a week and costed him over $300 in repairs. He tried troubleshooting the problem using a hot wire. He fried his wiring harness, ignition switch, engine kill harness, and nearly took both coils. And it should had, just got very lucky it didn't. Anyway he had install the original fuel pump system.

As for the fuel system if this 1515 still has the original Kohler engine it at one time had a mechanical fuel pump driven by the camshaft. Hopefully that at least it was bypassed. Removed and a block off plate install would be better if using a bypass pump.

A manually adjustable automotive style inline fuel pressure regulator placed between the carburetor and the fuel pump would resolve this issue.

As Star Tech indicated, these carburetors only require a very low PSI fuel pump to operated. A typical parts store automotive electric pump produces too much pressure and volume, so a regulator is needed.

Original design engine mounted fuel pumps are still available for this engine the last time I checked.
