I have a cub cadet that I just bought(used). It has an 18 horse Kohler that runs really hot. The shrouds are all on the engine, but the side shields are missing. Will mthis cause overheating?

Engine Runs For 30 Min. Then Shuts Down | Mower & Small Engine Repair | Briggs & Stratton FAQ I know you have a Kohler but similar symtoms. Change oil, fuel filter, air filter & spark plug after removing blower housing, top of engine, & cleaning engine thoroughly, do not use water or liquid engine cleaners, small inexpensive paint brush, shop vac etc. I would also check coil for replacement with inexpensive multi-meter tool.

Thanx for the reply Mark. The engine does not shut down it keeps running, but very hot. I was told that the side shields(TRactor not engine)being gone may cause this problem,~~~Barry

I doubt the side shields are a factor unless they are built in some manner to direct atmospheric ambient air flow rather than air from around the engine. Some tractors have a similar design but that feature is often built into the hood. John Deere is an example.

Being this is a pre-owned tractor there is always a chance a previous owner has leaned the fuel for better economy and that can cause undue heating. Also be sure the engine is operating at full designed throttle, especially when under a load.
