Cub Cadet LTX1050 22hp kohler courage

Ok so before i begin...yes i know and have heard bad things about the courage but it has worked well for me for the past 4 years. No issues with motor at all.

The problem I am having started with the starter gear sticking up in the engaged position. Battery was old and needed replaced anyway so I did that. No change.

Replaced solenoid ($15) and now the mower will start but I am getting a noise from the starter/flywheel gears while it is starting. Not sure what this could be? Teeth do not show any major wear or breakage.

Worn out starter?

Mower runs fine after starting and pinion gear drops down as it should.

Any help would be great

Yes, starter is the problem.

Yes, starter is the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to question your knowledge but what exactly goes wrong? I guess I'm asking if you could elaborate.

Pull blower housing cover spray Pb blaster on starter gear, and shaft. Start engine with cover off. You will see that with gear lubed up it will retract. Problem comes from weak battery not fully energizing the starter Bendix. Lube it up. That should fix it...........

Forgot to mention this but I've done that. Not sure how much it helped. Not having trouble with it sticking up anymore. Now it's just making a rough noise while starting.

Look just below the starter gear and see if there is something that looks like a rubber disc that comes up over the bottom edge of the starter gear. If that rubber disc is missing it will sound like you are stepping on and then twisting on the cats tail. will need to replace starter since the bendix kit is no longer available. Just did one last week on a craftsman.

Thanks for the suggestion. The rubber disc is in place.
