Came out to find my 17 yr old lawn tractor had gas in the oil and gas backing up into the air filter. It just drained the tank through the oil filler hole after I removed the Oil filler tube. Had tried to start it with a jump from my car assuming the battery was weak when it wouldn't start. Think the block is cracked? or is there some other way gas would be all over the joint? This baby has been well used and pretty well cared for. She might be ready for the heep but If its something I can fix or if I can find a reasonably priced replacement engine I like to know. Craftsman tractor 15 HP built in 1995. appreciate any help

Don't think it is serious, seen to many of these this year. What probably happened is that the float needle did not seat properly allowing the fuel to fill the carb and then run through the air horn into the cylinder and crankcase. What's the fix? Replace the needle and seat in the carb. Change the oil. Remove the spark plug and pull the engine over a couple of times to remove gas from the cylinder. Reassemble everything and start outside, it may smoke for awhile if there is fuel and oil in the muffler. I feel that the cause is ethanol in today's fuel which causes the seat to expand and not seal. For the last two years we have been recommending that our customers use none ethanol fuel when ever possible. Hpoe this helps.

I'm on it. Thanks for the concise, easy to follow explanation. I'll let you know how I make out.

Rebuilt the carb with kit from Partstree. Replaced stator (altenator), have it all back together and charging the battery. Changed oil, new spark plug. First time I tried to start it up - sheared the flywheel key. smartly I ordered three when I got my last shipment of parts - have it all back together - still wont turn over. Battery not strong enough to start on its own but when I jump it - the starter seems to have enough juice to bump the flywheel - still no start. Any help in diagnosing would be appreciated.

First of all, the flywheel key probably sheared because it was not torqued properly. Next check and see if you have spark and fuel is getting into the cylinder. Let us know.
