After adding transmission fluid to the mower due to leaking transmission seals, I cut a couple of hours. Today it is sputtering and backfiring after half an hour mowing. Ideas? Also, is there a recall in place due to seals not put in properly in factory? Machine is model # 944.60433 22 HP Electric start, auto transmission. Purchased from Sears Canada 09/09/14.

It sounds like you may have a couple different issues with your mower. First, what type of transmission fluid did you add and where on your mower did you add it?

Same type as in the car, the small engine repair shop advises that he uses engine oil himself, but that there was no problem with the Brand and type used. He did, however point out that the amount added was overly generous. (But with the continued leaking seals that was not probably a bad thing.) I had ordered some Permatex 51550 anaerobic flange sealant to fix that, took two weeks to come, but have it now.
The small engine repair guy mentioned that the factory needed to install 2 sets of seals interior and exterior in the transmission, but failed to do so in a high number of these 'off the shelf' transmissions. His friend, who did the actual work thus far, used an existing port to add the transmission fluid once he removed the transmission from the beast.
