My rider mower (Craftsman 18 HP 42", 917.272420) has worked well for about 13 years. However this past year the engine speed would go into a constant fluctuating mode of fast (normal) to slow (underpowered). It would fluctuate steadily on high speed for a few seconds then slow speed for a few seconds. In order to avoid this I would have to push the choke off the normal detent run position toward the full choke position in order to find the 'sweet' spot to keep it running smoothly. Moving the throttle just a little too far toward chock would stall the engine. The problem has gotten worse such that now I am unable to mow without the engine stalling 8 to 10 times during a 1/2 hour mowing job. I have cleaned air filter, changed fuel filter and replaced spark plug....but problem still persists. It appears to be something to do with the carburetor/engine fuel linkage ....but I cannot find any info on how it works or how to adjust.

Thank You

Your engine has a lean running condition. Your 13 year old unit is in need of a complete carb cleaning and rebuilding.
