I have a Craftsman lawnmower model 917371030 with. Briggs engine model 11P905-1267-B1. I have a had a hard time starting. I could spray a little carb cleaner and it would start, still hard but start. I rebuilt the carburetor put in a new spark plug gapped the magneto/coil tested the spark by placing a spark tester in series with the plug and high tension plug cable and when I start the engine I get solid light flash in the tester. But the engine doesn't turn over. I have good compression. I can feel good vacuum at the carburetor and smell gas getting to the carburetor and there is gas in the float bowl. I can shoot some carburetor cleaner into the carburetor and it still won't turn over. I can't help but think the coil even though it looks as though it is providing spark is not hot enough to fire the engine. Any help would be appreciated

May need to check the flywheel key for offset or shearing.

Thank you ILENGINE, I got home tonight, popped the fly wheel off and sure enough the key was sheared. I can't wait to get home tomorrow with a replacement key and try it out.

Hi I replaced the key. Still won't start. Tries to. I can smell gas getting into the chamber. Back fires lightly, not a full back fire, like all the fuel is not getting detonated. I can also shoot some carb cleaner in and that doesn't help start it. I have to think it's the coil. I place a spark test on the high voltage plug wire (not a B&S tester) an old car engine tester and it lights. I also checked the resistance on the coil and it's 7700 ohms. I wrote B&S and they told me to replace the coil. I found a coil on E Bay for $20 I think this may be worth the gamble before I break down and buy a new mower Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
