I bought this riding mower and noticed when I turn key it makes a cranking noise but I look through the top of motor and its not turning. The headlights turn on so battery is good. What could this be?

Sounds like from what your telling me that starter is cranking but the engine isnt turning over. If so thats the pinion gear on the starter isnt engaging on the flywheel to turn engine over. IF so check the pinion gear on the starter and make it moving up when spinning. Also check the gear on the flywheel.

If you cant tell by looking while its on the engine then yes. Least remove the starter cover.

I also noticed Theres a white wire just hanging out behind motor like the wire is going towards the left side of motor. Do you have any idea where that should go?

So I took cover off and I found the starter gear in pieces so the gear is ordered and just waiting on that now

Starter gear installed and she started rite up but need new gas and a fuel filter and air filter then ill actually see if it runs good. It smoked a little but Im guessing its the bad gas and maybe built up gunk but I adjusted the magnito points gapped to a card so ill spray some carb cleaner on the fly wheel to clean it then see what happens

Well got a new fuel filter, new fuel line. Sanded the flywheel a llittle to clean rust off.sprayed some carb cleaner in the carb to clean old fuel out of it. Cleaned out gas tank of the old bad gas. And fired right up and she fired up. I let it warm up and drove it around for about 30 mins .and it runs great. Thanks for all the help.
