when I start my mower it is really hard to put in any gear..turn mower off and it's easy to put in gear..why is this???

It could be the belt is still turning when brake/clutch is pressed which is then still turning the gearbox pulley and not allowing gears to engage.

Check belt routing and linkage.

Yep sounds like the brake/ clutch rod needs adjusting. Do you have a manual with it?
