craftsman lawn tractor drive clutch hard to shift

I have a craftsman model 917.273638. Single pedal brake and clutch. The clutch seems to not fully disengage the gearbox. The brakes were almost non working, so I replaced the brake pads, and verified the brake rod is in adjustment. This seems to have made the clutch problem worse, although I now have some brakes. Any thoughts? Thanks,

Check under tractor where clutch goes thru frame, it sounds like you have a bad pully or something not riding right, go to Searspartsdirect.com and put in your tractor number then look up parts for clutch and how they go, it could be your belt is worn out and clutch doesn't move it enough to stop belt. Let us know what you find.

Will do. I ordered a new belt. If I have to take the mower deck off anyway to examine the pulleys, I might as well just replace the belt at that time!
Thanks for the response!

Yesterday I replaced the drive belt. The hard shift issue is GONE! THANK YOU! I know I should let this go, and forget about the following, but I am going to ask...
The clutch/brake...when I release the clutch into a drive gear, the clutch seems to engage very quickly, and the tractor does a wheelie at high RPM. Assuming, the driver is not at fault, is there some kind of adjustment needs to be made. Merry Christmas!

Make sure the disc brake isn't set too tight. I have had cases where the transmission belt is trying to engage prior to the brakes releasing. Imagine holding the brakes on your car with your left foot, reving the engine up with your right and then releasing the brakes.

According to the manual, the brakes are in adjustment by being 1.5 distance between set nut and disc operating bracket. That is where currently is.
If I were to adjust tightness in your scenario, would I "back off" the operating bracket, i.e. open up distance?
