Just purchase a used Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model # 917.271.08. Half hour of driving and the ground drive belt slipped off. Had to cut the belt off as it wrapped around the pulley shaft on the transaxle. Got a 82 inch x 1/2 belt, and it slips off after a few minutes. The OEM belt # 140294 is specified as a 82". Any ideas what to look for to keep the damn belt on?

Make sure all belts guides are in place, also make sure that the tranny support bracket at the front or front corner is connected properly. If the support bracket is not attached, the tranny will rock and cause the belt to come off.

If the machine has no belt guide, that is what you need to add. I done that to my Yard Tractor. I used 2 6" long 3/8 bolts and bolted them to the frame. They are positioned on the right side, with 1/16" above and below the belt, about 6" away from the rear pulley.
Works perfectly. You might need to bend them to get the positioning proper.
