Craftsman Garden Tractor Spews Gasoline

My Craftsman Mower (garden tractor) has a Briggs & Stratton 19.5 hp engine. It had been sitting idle for about 2 weeks. When I went to start it, it started reluctantly, ran about 5 seconds and quit. When running, it spewed white smoke and gasoline came out of a rubber pipe (about 3/4" diameter) on the engine near the carburetor.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong? This machine drives me crazy...always something going wrong!

Thanks.

Remove the dipstick and smell the oil. I will bet it smells like gas. If so then you need to remove and clean the carb, install a new carb kit, then change the oil and filter. You can install fuel shutoff valve in the fuel line as a safety measure, but shouldn't be used as a bandaid repair.

My last Craftsman 2008 had gas pass the carb float & it went into the engine, a 20 hp B&S...

There was a tiny piece of white plastic that got stuck under the needle valve inside carb, that allowed gas to pass.. Cleaned the carb thoroughly, drained the engine oil & replaced with fresh & new oil filter too..

Plus added an in-line gas shut-off valve..
