Craftsman DYS4500, Intek V-twin 24 hp, Nikki 2 barrel carb, very rich idle

The mower has run great for the past few years. I use non-meth fuel and have on-off valve to allow running fuel out after mowing. This year it has started running rich at idle, black smoke, and choke is fully open. Without removing carb. the only adjustment screw visible is for idle speed. I am a 71 year old retired/disabled auto mechanic/shop owner of over 45 years. So I am familiar with carb rebuild and adjustment procedures ... if any! Any suggestions appreciated!

Rich running on todays newer engines is rare excluding needle valve leakage problems. Most likely the carb needs removed and cleaned.

Yep most adjustment screws are sealed off where you cant adjust them. I would say a good cleaning would be best too. Have you ever checked, and adjusted the valves?

I guess you are saying the engines don't use float bowls with inlet needles and seats? ( I do not know). In the old days over rich could easily be a worn inlet needle seat or a punctured float, either one causing flooding. Never have been inside these.:2cents:

Perhaps he is just assuming that it is running rich...

Nikki 2 barrel carbs have 2 jets held in by o-rings. If they leak it will run rich.
