Craftsman blowing fuse

I have an older Craftsman rider with a 18 hp kohler. The 30 amp fuse gets hot and blows after a few minutes. If a disconnect the voltage regulator it will not blow. When I touch the voltage regulator when connected to the engine it sparks. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like a short to ground. See if you can get a factory manual. They usually have some vom (meter) checks on the charging systems. Or substitue another v-reg if you can. Hang in and maybe someone else with experience will respond.
