Craftsman 917.370950 434564 gear case assembly, need gear to run a lot slower

This mower moves much too fast for my old legs. Need to slow the walking speed much slower, maybe half the speed. Changing pulleys on belt drive apparently would be insufficient. Has anyone encountered this problem and maybe found a gear part to fit this gear case, that would significantly slow the axle speed?

Isn't that a variable speed model? If so don't pull the go trigger all the way back.

Thank you for your reply. But the type of control is a VERY poor design.
The pulleys on both ends of the drive belt are fixed size pulleys and
the only thing that the hand controls does, is to modify the amount of
tension on the drive belt. THE POOR DESIGN relates to the fact that,
unless the hand control is fully pulled back, the belt must slip at
all slower speeds, which promotes undue wear on the belt as well as
the aggravation of continuous changing of the hand control as the mower
enters heavy or light grass (or slope changes).

My old John Deere 14SB has a multi-speed transmission and has a similar
hand control, which allows full drive belt tension (because I can use
a lower transmission gear), AND there is no aggravation of having to
continuously change hand control settings as the mower enters heavy
or light grass or lawn slope changes.

So, does ANYONE here have a solution to the POOR design? Or a suggestion
of how to slow this gear speed down? I have not found a multi-speed
transmission replacement for this mower.

I removed the debris cover and found that changing the pulley sizes is
not an option.
