Craftsman 358.355061 Chain saw oiler quit working

Yesterday I was cutting up firewood with my '89 vintage saw, after ten minutes of cutting, I shut it off to move wood chunks, and before restarting, checked the chain tension. The oil tank was still nearly full, but the chain and bar were really hot and dry. I took the cover off, cleaned everything well, reinstalled the chain after lubing both bar and chain with a brush and chain oil, but after 5 minutes the bar and chain were almost dry. According to the manual, the 3 causes possible are:

1. Oil tank empty (DUH)
2. Guide bar oil hole blocked (it wasn't)
3. Oil pump or oil filter clogged

Parts diagram shows NO OIL PUMP !! And opposite the chain oil tank fill hole, there is a cover you can remove, the parts diagram and parts list both show a part titled "Metering body assembly) that one end of the U-shaped oil line attaches to, and the other end of the line goes to the oil hole by the bar and chain assembly. Here is where it gets weird...on my saw there is NO METERING BODY ASSEMBLY, the hose end basically attaches to a plastic pin on the cover mentioned above. And, get this...I have a newer saw, '92 vintage, same basic saw, only model number is different. Guess what...manual for that one also shows and names "Metering body assembly" but as on older model saw, THERE IS NONE.

Am I correct in assuming the metering body assembly is the oil pump? And if that is the case, where is it? And why did my saw run fine for so long without that part? Thanks for any feedback.

If you start the saw with out the bar on it and just let it idle will you get any oil to come out of it?

Thanks, thought about that but manual clearly states "DO NOT START ENGINE WITHOUT BAR AND CHAIN ATTACHED". They put that in the manual because they are worried about the possibility of the clutch coming apart and causing injury. I have not paid much attention to the saw since posting, will not need it for a while anyhow. Nice to see another member from Mid-Michigan on LMF.
