St. Patrick's day is almost upon us (this thursday, in fact)!

Share your favorite way to make corned beef!

Here's mine:

Small head of cabbage, cut into 8ths, bout 2 cups water
corned beef, fat side up, with the spice packet rubbed on it. Then coat the top of THAT with yellow mustard & brown sugar.

Slow cook in an oval crockpot for 8 hrs on low.

Serve with a nice irish stout.

Now I'm hungry again!!!

Fat side down, braise the corned beef then turn, cover with water and simmer for 30 minutes. Add 2 small onions and 2 cloves garlic, simmer for 30 mintues add cabbage and potatoes cover and turn heat to low for 1 hour. Add salt and fresh ground black pepper.
I perfer a german double bock, "Spaten Optimator". Truly a fine beer. You will pour you Guiness in the cats bowl after tasting it:licking:
Hey! what does this have to do with lawnmowers?

Nothing. That's why it's posted in 'the front porch', and not 'general mower discussion'

I have a thread, there, too.....and it DOES concern mowers........

I don't eat much corned beef but when we do it is done up with a ton of veggies and stuff, all types, potatoes, carrots, cabbage and turnip. Yum, this is starting to sound good!

Does any know how the term "corned beef" came into use?

Back in the days before we had refrigerators and freezers, butchers would pack beef and pork in salt for preservation. At one time "corn" referred to the corns of coarse salt granules packed around the meat.

Does anyone care?

That's what I do with the leftovers! (If there are any....last few years I've had to buy corned beef from the deli afterward.....to go with the cabbage......always run out of beef before I run out of cabbage.....)

Goodness, I haven't had corned beef in years, not since my gran was alive. She used to make it quite a bit for Sunday dinner.

Normally for me just on reubens, but the front page of the local Meijers sale flyer for this week has flat cut corned beef briskets for $1.99 a pound. Wife wants to make a bunch of them in the crock pot so....

Yes this thread made me hungry....

Whoever invented the crock pot did us househusbands a big favor, since the wife works full time I do almost all the meal preparations...my step mom got me this book for Christmas a few years back: "Five-Ingredient Slow Cooker Recipes". Sure have had some great meals from it.
