Cordless electric purchase: EGO 20" 56V vs. GreenWorks G-MAX Twin Force 20" 40V

Hey everyone,

First time homebuyer, so new to the landscaping and lawn mowing world. I am strongly considering an electric cordless mower for mowing our ~12K sq ft yard. Our entire lot is a tad less than 0.3 acre (including the home and driveway), so I believe a cordless mower should suffice.

I had been leaning towards the GreenWorks G-MAX Twin Force 20" 40V mower for the past week, but just stumbled across the EGO 20" 56V mower yesterday during my weekly run to Home Depot. Both mowers have great reviews, but the EGO has a better warranty and some nice bonuses, like compact upright storage and 30 minute full charge time.

Here's my detailed product comparison:
GreenWorks G-MAX Twin Force 20" 40V Mower
  • Includes 2 4AH Lithium Ion
  • 75 hour run time
  • 2 hour charge time
  • 50.5 pounds (with battery)
  • 2-in-1: bagging or mulching
  • Energy conservation - automatically powers up when sensing grass buildup
  • 4-year warranty equipment; 2-year warranty battery
  • Non-compact storage (handle collapses, but unit is not foldable)
  • $350.99 (no tax or shipping; 2.5% cashback on FatWallet) on CPO Outlets
EGO 20" 56V Lithium Ion Mower
  • Includes 1 56V Lithium Ion Battery
  • 45 hour run time
  • 30 minute charge time
  • 62 pounds (with battery)
  • 2-in-1: bagging or mulching
  • 5-year warranty equipment; 3-year warranty battery
  • Compact upright storage
  • $471.24 after sales tax less 10% coupon + 5% ShopDiscover cashback at Home Depot (retails for $499.99+tax)

Obviously the GreenWorks is a great deal for 30 more minutes of runtime, an extra 40V LiIon battery, and a lighter mower. Tradeoff is 1 less year warranty for both equipment and battery, a longer charge time, larger storage requirement and I've heard GreenWorks customer support is somewhat troublesome (haven't heard much about EGO's customer support).

Also, for what it's worth, I have a $346 Home Depot gift card received as a housewarming gift I could use on the EGO, but not the GreenWorks, obviously.

So, with all this said, would you pay the extra $111 for the EGO or save some money (but pay out of pocket) for the GreenWorks?

I have a Greenworks mower. Not the one you are contemplating, but the 19" single blade one. I'm not sure if it's still a current model, but it has the same warranty and uses the same two batteries.
The shortcomings are a lack of power and, while its light weight is nice from an ease-of-use standpoint, the very thin steel deck seems underbuilt.
There is much more lawn here, probably almost an acre on my over 2-acre property, than the mower can process in one session, but it hasn't been a major problem. After using this tool for one season and putting about three years worth of hours on it, I'm not concerned about warranty issues. Electric equipment should be less prone to trouble than gas-powered stuff. But if something should go wrong, Greenworks has excellent customer service. I had some issues using my new Greenworks chainsaw with the older batteries from the lawnmower (it would stop mid-cut and throw a code) so they sent me a new chainsaw and replaced all 3 batteries. They thought the older batteries should have been fine, but they were a different part number than the one that came with the saw.

By the way that saw outperforms my 16" gas chainsaw by far and is a delight to use due to no 2-stroke fumes, no air filter clogging or 2-stroke noise. It's the best piece of equipment they make IMO. I'm looking forward to having an extra battery and charger from the chainsaw this year to use with the mower, to increase its runtime.

While I also have a gas-powered lawnmower, a Toro Timemaster 30", I prefer to use the Greenworks due to the low noise and lack of emissions. As I hate noise and fumes, the Timemaster was purchased before I got the Greenworks to minimize the time that I'd have to run an engine to mow the lawn. It takes a lot longer to mow with the Greenworks due to its much smaller size, but because it is quiet and I'm not breathing in fumes, I don't mind being out there for longer.
