can't say i ever saw a tore cord,but if the pull rope is frayed or a few strands left on the rope,then just put a new cord/rope on the mower assuming the mower is worthy of a new rope. dont try to repair the old one.if you never done one before take notes,as you take the housing apart. take pics.Common hand tools usually all you need.be careful of the spring in the housing.

Here's what I have done so far and what I am planning on doing, but before I proceed, I need my questions answered if possible.

Without removing the starter assembly from the motor that houses the rest of the cord, I bought a multi-purpose rope and attached it to the actual lawn mower's cord. Briggs Stratton mower starts, but there's a problem. Where the rope and cord is tied together there is a lump that prevents me to adequately start the engine so that it won't stop working after a few seconds of mowing (because it's too weak). To clarify, the lump/knot is too big to fit through the latch on the handle bar that supports the rope handle.

What if I removed this latch, pulled the rope handle, and then tied the handle of the starter cord to the handle bar by using the holes where the original latch was?

But my main concern is this: should I start the lawn mower without the latch notwithstanding the lack of restraint that was present with the latch (the cord would just slide smoothly through the big hole of the latch)?

My mower is a BS 300 series

getting the proper cord is the deal...theres different cords for different hp...its only about $5...i was at my local lawn mower repair/parts place today and a lady was dealing with the same situation...just get the all the numbers..maybe even take your mower in for a match...you can order over the internet..just get all the numbers....this link might give you a ball park...http://www.ereplacementparts.com/br...s-engine-parts-c-16758_17347_17514.html.....i like to cheap it too when i can..but you should do it the right way this time:thumbsup:....goodluck!..tell us how it goes!
