:frown: I had posted about a problem I am having with an old snapper rider that has a 12hp B&S (runs ok for a minute or two then sputters and dies, then will start back up but won't keep running), I've been advised that this maybe a fuel problem but I failed to mention that I had emptied the tank and had run the mower dry of the remaining fuel afterwards and now has fresh fuel in it. I should also have said that if the engine is allowed to cool down that it will run good for a minute or two then start the same thing. This kind of tells me this is a thermal problem and has been mentioned to me that the coil could be the culprit, Could it be? Any thoughts or suggestions?

usually thermal effect on the ignition module takes longer than a couple of minutes. does this engine have a anti afterfire solenoid on the carb. if so the plastic tip on the plunger may be coming off or the electric coil within the solenoid may be failing.

My best guess is that when you ran the last bit fuel out of the tank, there was some crud at the bottom of the tank and that crud is now clogging the carb. Try taking it apart and cleaning it.

If you've never had it apart you might want to take photos as you do it so you can get it back together the same way.

If you have a fuel filter between the tank and the carb, your job might be easier -- clean or replace the filter.

You might want to try dry gas, there could be moisture in the carburetor that makes it choke.

sounds like coil to me they are cheap and easy to replace ,when it starts to act up i would try to spray a little starting fluid and see if it still does it if it does, its the coil
