confused about starter switch

People,

I ohmed out my starter switch and concluded its no good (engine no start, switch no continuity), and my manual shows 2 kinds- the 725-1396 and 725-0267. Its aan MTD and the engine IS Tecumseh, but it also says "OHV 13HP". So my manual lists 2 kinds- one for the tecumseh and the other for the OHV 660-679, but BOTH tecumseh AND OHV are stamped on my engine.

In other words, why do they list a different switch for the OHV and tecumseh if my engine says tecuimseh OHV?? Man, confuuuuuusing!

Anyway, people, if yous can help, greatly appreciate it!! (heres some addl info which might help: Engine model: OHV 130 206820b, Family TTP358UIG 2RA, D.O.M. 8036D, displacement 358)

thanks.

As you said they are two difference switches, but what you don't understand is that the switch has nothing to do with which engine you have. They are related to the tractor and not the engine. Post your tractors model number and we will be able to tell you which switch is needed for your unit.

Ok, rivets, but then why does my manual list the 725-0267 for tecumseh?? I have a 667 model. Does that help determine? Thaks.

OK, looking at the manual closer, where it says OHV, next to it it says 660-679, so since mine is a 667 (serial # 13A 667 S118, mine is a 667, so has to be the 725-1396............but this photo doesnt match!! sheesh....

it looks exactly like this one:

725 0267 Ignition Switch w Keys for MTD Murray 421064 | eBay

and its listed in my manual under the engine tecumseh.

Very simple. If the letters on the back of your switch match the lettering pattern on the Murray switch, that is the one to use. Don't over think this problem, as I said, the engine does not matter, it is your tractor that dictates which switch to use.

The dealer parts lookup for a 667f218 with the tecumseh shows the 0267 switch for the 1998 model year.

If it is like that one it should be......
L=Lights
G=Ground
S=Start
B=Battery
M=Magneto

Just don't get Confused just replace one wire at a time.

Oh- lastly, while im waiting , Im thinking of cutting grass by jumping the mower starter then I need to wire jump 2 terminals on the starter switch wire cluster terminal. Should I jump B and M (magneto)? other terminal ends?

Thanks

The only thing that should ever touch the M terminal is a ground wire to kill the engine. If you put voltage to the Ignition module you will need to replace it, because it will fry. If you have a fuel solenoid on the carb, you will need to supply power to it when it is starting and running.

Very good advice...! I would leave it until you have the new switch.

sheesh, santa brought me a new switch, popped it in, and still no start. man, and I thought I had diagnosed it right. Oh well, whats the chance of having 2 bad switches, I figure(have not ohmed out the new switch yet). I cant get any voltage to the opposite side of solenoid! I do have voltage on one leg. Also, when switch is turned to ON position, and volt meter is topuching that far leg, no voltage. What can one do now, people?

Thaks!!
