I was givin a murray 42 inch with a 17.5 briggs motor.everything in the wiring was disconnected and I don't have spark.there is a tab on the coil and was wondering if that is for a kill switch or does that need to be grounded to something.i don't have a battery or starter and don't no if it is worth fixing.the previous owner was jumping it from the solenoid and I think he fried the starter.my main concern is the coil because when the starter was working I had no spark and I cleaned the flywheel magnets.

the terminal on the coil is for a kill switch wire, so left unplugged, if you crank/rotate you will have spark, unless your coil is bad.

But what destroys these coils is by voltage inadvertently getting supplied to the kill wire terminal, it will kill them quick, so
don't hook up anything to that terminal of a good coil, unless you know what goes to what.

Folks will pick up a wrong keyswitch, burn up a good coil, then be faced with now 2 reasons why their tractor won't start, which
is why I always try to get the whole story when helping folks.....

ok thanks,there was a mouse problem with this mower and it did chew into the coil wire but someone put black tape on it.this is what happens when you get something for free lol.im going to buy a batt,starter and see if I can get a spark.if I do then I will get a good starter button and toggle to kill it.coils aren't cheap but even if I get this going with a new coil im only 100 dollars into it.if I do get a toggle how would I hook it up?would I get a wire from from the coil to toggle?most toggles are two terminals that ive seen but when it comes to electrical im no expert.

All you have to do to kill the engine is ground the tab on the coil. Run a wire from the toggle to any metal part of the frame and a wire from the toggle to the tab on the coil. When the tab on the coil has continuity to ground, it shuts off the ignition to the spark plug.

One minute you say you don't have starter, then you the previous owner was jumping it from the solenoid, then you say that he fried it, and then you go on to say your main concern is the coil because when the starter (the one you don't have/or the one that has been fried) was working I had no spark. seems to be more to this then you are saying, or not saying. Post up the model & type numbers that are on the B&S engine.
