murray mower, model unknown (sticker unreadable)

When you press down on the clutch, isn't the drive belt supposed to stop turning?

I cant get it to stop being spun even when the clutch is fully depressed. I even took the tensioner pulley off to make it extra loose, and it still turns. It's a new drive belt, and is supposed to be the same length of the old one.

I thought maybe i should try a longer belt, but its already really loose with the tensioner pulley off... so i didnt know if there was maybe something else i could do.

Here is a video of it:

Thanks for any help!

Does your mower still move when clutch is depressed ?

My craftsman drive belt still spun with clutch depressed, but it was only slipping around the pulleys, mower did not move.. That is normal.

Yeah it still moves with the clutch pressed. Previously the brakes didnt work, so the only way i had to stop it was to hold the clutch in and roll to a stop. Now there is no way to stop it because the brakes dont work and it stays moving with the clutch held... only way to stop is to throw it in neutral.

im also working on the brakes, but i figure this is an issue to if it keeps moving with clutch held.

thanks mark... i didnt use those for this murray mower, but i have another MTD mower that i am about to repair and those manuals will help a lot.

update on the belt issue: the belt i got from the auto store was the same length, but thicker than my old belt so that was probably causing the problem... took it back and ordered what i guessed my old belt said on it (37x87 was barely legible) and it worked properly on the mower.

It is nice to see that the forum helped you fix your mower.
