Cleaning Exterior of Engine

Just curious, what do you guys use to clean your engines? I have an older Honda mower and it could use a good cleaning. I hear of people using a power washer and others using brake cleaner. What do you use?

Depends on how dirty it is. Air compressor blow gun for routine cleaning. Carb cleaner and a toothbrush for oily caked-on grime. I used to just use gasoline or kerosene.

The spray on foaming engine cleaners work well + an old toothbrush for really stubborn areas.

I'm hesitant to use a power washer for fear of damaging the more fragile carb/governor linkages.

Compressed air.

We use a spray degreaser and then a pressure washer. Afterward dry with air and run for 5 minutes.

Yeah that was my concern was using a pressure washer. Fear that it might damage or mess with the linkages. I never thought of using degreaser. I might try that next time! This honda that was given to me was pretty dirty and grimy so I used some brake cleaner and quickly wiped off the hoses and paint. So far no harm to anything.
